I live in Scranton, PA and am looking into buying a police scanner next year. I;m new to this, so I don’t know any of the technical details, but I have some of the police dept’s specs listed below if it helps.
What are the differences in scanners and which would be best for me? I don’t need anything super high-tech and I really only care about picking up on the city I live in and maybe some surrounding areas.
Basically I just want to be nosey I guess. LoL I just like to know what’s going on around me. That’s all.
HERE ARE SOME SPECS, IF IT HELPS!!!!!!!!!
— Scranton Police Channel 1 —
Frequency: 453.37500
License: WPEM692
Type: RM
Tone: 110.9 PL
Mode: FM
— Scranton Police Channel 2 —
Frequency: 453.70000
License: WPEM692
Type: RM
Tone: 110.9 PL
Mode: FM
I am looking to get a handheld one, not the ones for the car.

Presumably you are referring to a base model and not a mobile unit ; some states have laws against having mobile units in a vehicle..maybe not in PA

The site below has reviews of handheld scanners. It should give you all the information you need. One issue you need to look out for is the police department going digital. If the scanner you buy isn’t capable of receiving digital transmissions that will end your listening to them. Unfortunately, a digital capable scanner costs a lot more than a regular analog scanner.

DJ – Go down to your local Radio Shack and ask them about this. They have great scanners and they are pretty helpful in helping to pick out the right one for your area.
I find it hard to believe that the large city of Scranton PA (population 72 thousand) has only 2 frequencies – my guess would be that they have more like 10 or more. Those frequencies you found may be old ones that are used by some other city service now. Radio Shack will know.
